Facebook Murder in Sydney, Australia

The recent murder of a young 18 year old girl in Sydney’s outskirts is yet another wake-up call for parents to be ever vigilant with their childrens’ access to Facebook and the Internet.

Local Police here in Sydney, NSW, Australia have issued the following strong warnings (directed to parents and responsible adults):

  1. Remove any Facebook profile pictures & any Facebook information (with references to schools and groups that children belong to) – certainly from public pages
  2. Review and assess computer use by children at home and school
  3. Make sure all family computers are in a public area of the home

Unfortunately, there is too much information available to stalkers and predators. Apart from exercising parental prudence, it is always a good time to review and enforce the responsible use of IT.

Personally, I think we can give too much credit to our childrens’ maturity. I believe our childrens’ access to their own Facebook account should be delayed as long as possible. What age? I cannot tell you that, but I think 12 to 13 is way too young…

Your thoughts…?

Thanks for the warning. My daughter (14) spends quite some time on FB these days. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on her!

Thanks for your feedback DFMom!

Funny you should mention that because last night my 14 and a 1/2 year old daughter mentioned (to my wife and I) a 10 yo girl from her school had just started on Facebook. All our collective eyes rolled around the room in bewilderment! What can I say?

I asked my daughter to check if either of the 10 year old’s parents were her FB friend. No…now that is really sad!

Wow. Yes, I feel I have at least a little control being on FB myself.

Just a reminder that I am not the parenting expert, but I did hear a wonderful lady called Kathy Walker (her website is http://earlylife.com.au/info/ ) speak recently and she said that children (pretty much all ages) should be restricted to no more than 1 hour per day of screen time (inc TV computer etc). Maybe put in these terms our kids will be more discerning with their allowed time and maybe FB will take a back seat!

Also, just a plug for Kathy Walker’s new book called “Parenting” – I have just started reading it, it looks good so far.
